Memories

Below is a list of people who are either Juddville natives or people with a strong connection to the town who have special memories to share about Juddville:

Nancy Hoffmann – As a four-year old in 1949, Nancy started coming up in the summers to a small cabin her parents Augie and Mary had constructed in Juddville. Her parents and a group of friends from the Chicago area bought properties on Juddville Rd in 1940 with the intent of starting a commune. Nancy treasures the time she spent in Juddville and Door County during her childhood and later as an adult. Olaf Olsen – Olaf Olsen was the grandson of Nicholas Kihl, the second settler of Juddville. Olaf, who grew up in Juddville and lived much of his life in the small unincorporated town, spent some time away as a young man to cut lumber, serve with the Coast Guard, and be a chauffer to Mrs. Elizabeth Merrill Bass who with her husband owned the Hermitage log home in Juddville. Mrs. Bass was friends with prominent Democrats in the first half of the 20th century including Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and famous attorney Clarence Darrow. To get a greater understanding of early Juddville and learn more about Olaf’s life working for Mrs. Bass, read the interview of Olaf by Linda Neeck Smith in the book “Fish Creek Echoes”.
