Gas Station / Grocery Store

At the southwest corner of Highway 42 and Juddville Road, in the building where the Deanna Clayton Glass studio is currently located, there was a gas station / grocery store owned by Eva Klingbile. Eva began operating the business in 1932. Prior to that, the same building had housed a cheese factory that provided income to local farmers.

The photo above offers a glimpse of the grocery side of her business. Canned goods, bananas, popcorn, cereal, laundry detergent, and an assortment of other grocery items can be seen on display in the relatively small store space.

A blurb in the Door County News read, “Miss Eva Klinkenbile (sic) recently purchased the former Juddville cheese factory building of George Resseler. The building which was formerly occupied by Mrs. Carlson is located on highway 17 (now Highway 42).” (Source: “Egg Harbor”. “The gas station was clad in a grayish-brownish tar paper, with a pattern vaguely resembling bricks, and was run by Eva Klingbeil (sic), also known by the local kids as the “Mayor of Juddville”. Eva additionally was a City Service dealer selling gas, and perhaps other automotive products of the City Service Oil Company. It appears that Eva ran the gas and grocery business until at least the late 1960’s and perhaps up until her death caused by a car accident in 1972 at the age of 68. Eva had her business in this building for about 40 years.

After Eva died, the building became the home of the Juddville Art & Glass business. Then it housed the Spirited Hands gallery and the initial incarnation of the Hands On gallery (now operating on Peninsula Players Road), both owned by Cy Turnbladh. Then the building became the site of the Emerson Chiropractic & Wellness business. And now today, it is the home of the Deanna Clayton Glass studio.
