Seventh-day Adventists

Some of the early Juddville settlers were Seventh-day Adventists. The Seventh-day Adventist Church is a Protestant denomination that observes Saturday as Sabbath, and believes in the Second Coming, the advent, of Jesus Christ.

In the spring of 1876, a church was organized by Elder H.W. Decker, and revival meetings were held in Fish Creek. Additionally, it is believed that the Juddville Cemetery, where many of Juddville’s earliest settlers were laid to rest, was started by Seventh-day Adventists. (Source: Holand, Hjalmar R. “22. The Seventh-day Advent Church in Fish Creek still stands today but is no longer an active church. Once it was built in 1881, many of the Seventh-day Adventists in the Fish Creek area, including some of those living in Juddville, worshiped at the new church. Here is an excerpt from the Door County Advocate February 24, 1881 edition that describes the completion of the Fish Creek church: “The Seventh Day Adventists of this vicinity have their church edifice entirely finished on the outside. As soon as the weather will permit the interior will be completed and made ready for the use of the congregation. The building is a neat and handsome structure, and reflects credit upon the society, which is comparatively small in numbers. Mr. Ed. Anderson was the architect and builder. Sometimes Seventh-day Adventists services were held under a tent close to Juddville. “The Seventh Day Adventists are holding a series of meetings under canvass, between Fish Creek and Juddville. The attendance is said to be large.” (Source:  “Local Intelligence and Happenings”. Sometimes services were held in the Juddville schoolhouse. “Elder Sanborn, of Sparta, seventh day adventist, held divine services at the schoolhouse on Tuesday evening.” (Source: “The County Mail-Bag: Juddville”.
