Juddville Settlers

Nicholas Kihl joined Josiah Judd in Juddville in 1869 as the second permanent Juddville resident and planted one of the first cherry orchards in Door County. They were followed by more settlers in the 1870’s and 80’s who were mostly Norwegians and Swedes. (Source: “Town of Gibraltar: 20 Year Comprehensive Plan”. One of these early settlers, a Swede named Otto Anderson, was a farmer who ultimately donated the land for both the St. Paul Lutheran Church, about 100 yards east of Hwy 42 on Juddville Road, and the Juddville schoolhouse, located on the southeast corner of Hwy 42 and Juddville Road. Otto and his wife raised their 17 children in Juddville. These early settlers toiled, worshiped, went to school and socialized with one another. They farmed, fished, logged and participated in a cash and barter economy to sustain themselves during a period when life was simpler but much more arduous than it is today.

The early Juddville settlers included these families:

  • Anderson (Otto and Ida). Otto and his wife Ida had 17 children. Otto donated the land for both St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and the Juddville schoolhouse.
  • Burr (Enos and Emily)
  • Ellis (Ezra and Emily)
  • Fish (Daniel and Caroline)
  • Glenn (Hans and Caroline)
  • Graham (Dr. David and Elizabeth) Dr. Graham actually settled in what would become Juddville earlier than Josiah Judd. Graham first came to Door County in 1858 and initially made his home in what would become Juddville. In 1867, Graham moved to Egg Harbor, where he stayed until he died in 1882.
  • Judd (Josiah and Mary Ann) Josiah was the founder of Juddville.
  • Kihl (Nicholas and Annie) Nicholas was the second permanent resident of Juddville. He planted one of the first cherry orchards in Door County.
  • Lundberg (C.A. and Alice) – Charles Alexander (or Alex) owned and ran a general store located where Juddville Road ends at the shoreline of Juddville Bay.
  • Mapes (John and Betsey/Josephine)
  • Robertoy (Frank and Ellen/Lydia)
